I’ve never had much trouble getting a woman’s attention.
A guitar, a cowboy hat, and a halfway decent smile usually do the trick.
Then the preacher’s daughter walks onto a stage beside me.
She’s all curves beneath a sweet little dress with a voice so beautiful I nearly forget I’m supposed to be playing the guitar.
I’ve known her forever.
I just never knew she could make me feel like this.
She’s everything I’m not. Careful, responsible, sweet enough to make my reputation look even worse than it is.
And according to her daddy, I’m exactly the kind of cowboy she should stay away from.
He’s probably got a point.
But the more we sing together, the harder it is to keep my distance.
Soon I’m sneaking her off to honky-tonks in ridiculous disguises, sharing one hotel bed, stealing kisses whenever I can, and watching the quiet woman I’ve always known come alive beneath the stage lights.
I’d do just about anything to help her chase the dream she’s been too afraid to claim.
There’s only one problem.
She’s doing the same thing to me.
Music has always been my dream, too. I just never had the guts to admit I wanted more than Saturday nights at the local bar.
Now an opportunity could give us everything we’ve secretly wanted.
It could also pull her away from the father she loves and me away from the family I’ve sworn I’ll never leave behind.
For once, the cowboy who always knows how to make everyone laugh doesn’t have an easy answer.
I just know I want her beside me.
On the ranch. On the stage. On whatever road comes next.
Maybe neither of us has to choose between the people we love and the lives we’ve been dreaming about.
Maybe we just need to be brave enough to take each other’s hand and say…
